As our country continues to fight the coronavirus pandemic, we are deeply saddened to inform you that after careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to not open Camp Wediko for summer 2020.
State officials in New Hampshire have not yet issued licensing guidelines for residential camps this summer. It is anticipated that any new requirements for operating amid this pandemic will be substantial and not possible to comply with on such short notice. This prolonged uncertainty has played a significant role in making this difficult decision not to open this summer.
Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our young people and staff members. With staffers and campers coming from all over the country, and the unpredictability of the virus, we cannot ensure our ability to effectively mitigate the safety risk. Our diverse and inclusive camp community also welcomes individuals who may be more vulnerable to a severe illness should they contract the virus. These are just some of considerations that went into making this difficult decision.
We understand that closing the program for summer 2020 places a tremendous hardship on many families and that there is a need for the supports that school and summer camp provide. Wediko, with its new partner, The Home for Little Wanderers, is considering other ways to support our youth and families during the summer months. It may not look the same, but know that you are not alone. We will continue to share information about how we can support you and we hope that you will remain engaged with us along the way.
Know that planning for Wediko’s summer 2021 is well underway. Camp Wediko is a New Hampshire tradition and in our rich 86-year history, this is only the third summer that we have not been able to operate our program, the previous two cancellations resulting from WWII. Just as we were during that challenging time, we remain committed to the youth and families who depend on us. We look forward to summer 2021 when we can welcome you back to camp.
