Stonesoup School was founded in 1971, and is the oldest alternative school in Florida. It was established to offer a supportive boarding school environment where students could explore there own interests, both academic and non-academic, at their own pace and level and learn to live in a community with others.
Students who were at risk of dropping out of conventional public school have met with great success in the “open-air” classrooms in which lesson plans are modified to meet the individualized needs of each learner.
Regular group meetings provide the opportunity for students to come together as a group to discuss issues and problem-solve for successful resolutions. This provides a framework for the students to practice nonviolent ways of conflict resolution, become skilled at handling and presenting their feelings and ideas, develop listening and empathy skills, and experience emotional growth.
Stonesoup’s Residential cabins have been built over the years through the combined efforts of staff and students. The simple and rustic setting promotes character building, self-reliance, and the development of survival skills.
