Gateway
Academy is a therapeutic school with an intentionally small capacity
for 12 boys ages 15-17 who are struggling with unresolved trauma,
ADHD, chemical dependency, academic deficits, social withdrawal,
diminished self-esteem, difficulties at home, peer group conflicts,
and other comparable difficulties. The boys attending the program
are mentored in personal, social, and intellectual development so
that they have every advantage necessary to help their transition
back to family, relationships and life.
“Four highly credentialed clinicians” run Gateway’s intensive treatment program,
creating “dynamic integration” of intense therapy, accredited schooling, and
recreational ventures. Specialized clinical groups, part of the treatment process,
include: The Phase Group, which teaches how to overcome maladaptive patterns
and develop enhanced feelings of self worth and more productive, accountable
behaviors; The Personal Development and Trauma Resolution Group, a process-oriented
group focusing on resolving trauma and enhancing each young man’s personal growth
and development; and, Choices, a task-oriented relapse prevention group that
identifies the youth’s personal obstacles and self-defeating patterns while focusing
on coping skills and relapse prevention strategies. Also incorporated into the
treatment program are three Learning Groups, the Young Adult Learning Group,
the Expectations Group, and the RAP Group, a daily peer support group. In addition
to its licensed clinician, Gateway’s treatment team also includes a Board Certified
Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Registered Nurse who can conduct a psychiatric
evaluation and prescribes and monitor medication.
Gateway’s individualized educational program is administered by Woodland
Hills School and accredited by the Northwest Association of
Schools and Colleges. It’s certified teachers and comprehensive
educational curriculum emphasize, “visual, hands-on kinesthetic learning
as well as individual thinking and learning styles.” It is based on
a clinical therapeutic model that incorporates an active recreational
program with off-campus activities each weekend, either in Salt
Lake City or out of town.
