The SALT
(Strategic Alternative Learning Techniques) Center was founded
in 1980 as part of the University Learning Center at the University
of Arizona. It currently helps approximately 520 students with
learning disabilities or attention deficit disorders, offering a
wide range of services to help them with “study skills, self-management,
or self-advocacy –all critical factors in postsecondary success.”
As evidenced by reports of colleges and universities throughout America,
many students lack the basic learning skills to enhance their academic
performance. Often in students with LD or ADHD, this problem is even
more pronounced, combined with the challenge of leaving behind the
structure of high school and home. At the SALT Center, a staff of 24
professionals and over 140 student employees are prepared to provide
the best possible academic support service to LD/ADHD students.
In the summer of 2002, the SALT Center was featured in Attention
Magazine, a regular publication of CHADD. The article has “paved
the way”for SALT’s inclusion in CHADD’s annual conference,
allowing SALT to be spotlighted as among one of the innovative programs
in the country that serves students with ADHD.
