PRESIDENTIAL EXECUTIVE ORDER 
On April 21, President Clinton signed Executive Order 12606. As reported by The Washington Times, the order directs “federal agencies make children’s safety and ‘environmental health’ issues a top priority and to consider such issues and risks in all federal policies, programs and standards.” That executive order also “quietly revoked an executive order issued by President Reagan that required that all federal policies be assessed as helpful or harmful to families.” 

IDAHO YOUTH RANCH 
Mike Jones, Director of the Idaho Youth Ranch, headquartered in Boise, Idaho, 208- 377- 2613, reports almost 100 children in all their facilities. Students at the ranch volunteered over 1,400 hours sandbagging homes on the Snake River, and the kids at Anchor House in Coeur d’Alene are building their own addition to their school. He also reports the CBS network has expressed interest in doing a story on the equine and thoroughbred breeding program at the Ranch. 

ACADEMY AT SWIFT RIVER 
Opening this summer, the Academy at Swift River in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, will have John Powers as Headmaster, Glenn Bender as Admission Director, Brett Carey as Dean of Students, and Rea Kreider as Dean of Academics. Seven students from sister school Mount Bachelor Academy, 800-462-3404, Bend, Oregon traveled cross country to Massachusetts to be joined by the new staff transferring from Oregon and Executive Director Tim Brace. 

SHORT-TERM HOLD AVAILABLE 
Laurie Bleick, Admissions Director for Desert Mountain Youth Care Facility near Hungry Horse, Montana, 406- 387- 5798, a new program for boys ages 12-18, announced their Crisis Intervention capability. In this, they are willing to take in boys on an emergency basis for a short time while parents are looking for a long term program, or to provide a safe place for boys while he is waiting for a spot to open up in a selected long term school or program.
