Northwoods Trailside
School is a family owned 10-week summer expedition program
based in Northern Idaho with an emphasis on stimulating
wilderness and academic experiences for teenagers.
Northwoods Trailside
School is intended to be physically, intellectually and emotionally
challenging. The objective is for students to experience new
ways to value themselves, their environment, and their relationships
to those most important to them.
The school's academic
themes are developed and presented by Idaho State Certified
teachers who assist the students in documenting their learning
and work with the student's local school to award credits
for their Northwoods experience.
The school uses
North Idaho locations such as the Kootenai River,
the Selkirk Mountains, Upper and Lower Priest
Lakes, the Pend Oreille River and lake
with "finals" in a Cabinet Mountain traverse before
returning to base camp, a family re-union, graduation and
development of a follow-up contact agreement.
Yeats has been a
social worker with the Marion County, Oregon Family
Court, a teacher/counselor at Rocky Mountain Academy,
and currently manages Individualized Services for Children's
Mental Health with Idaho Family and Children's Services.
Northwoods staff
are experiential educators Stephen Drinkard, Susan
Drinkard, Stephanie Fitzgerald, Ed Katz and Craig
Wavra. Most were teacher/counselors for Rocky Mountain
Academy and since have been teaching in North Idaho public
schools, Colleges and Universities. Wavra holds a Ph.D. in
geology and is an exploration geologist with Sunshine
Precious Metals. Their academic background includes credentials
from UCLA, the University of Hawaii, Oregon State University,
York College of City University New York, Adams College, North
Idaho College and the University of Idaho.
