Lon's Visit - July 16, 1992
With an idyllic
ranch setting about 15 miles outside the town of Leavenworth,
Alpine Boys Ranch was founded in 1976. With a goal of “Guiding
Young Men Towards a Wholesome Future”, this Christian-based
program requires each child to decide he wants this experience
before moving in.
Each boy attends
public school and progressively take on more responsibility
around the ranch when ready.
Key members of the
staff are the house parents, married couples, selected for
the ability to provide love, patience, courtesy and mutual
trust & respect. They provide the day-to-day structure,
with other staff supplementing with one-on-one counseling,
and group sessions.
The Ranch itself
has two group homes with a capacity of eight boys each. The
therapeutic group home in Leavenworth can handle four boys,
and the Independent Living program in Wenatchee can handle
four boys.
The ranch’s primary
focus is on helping kids, so they are very open to providing
scholarships to bring the tuition down to what is affordable
for the average family.
My impression was
of a good place for a boy who has mild behavior/emotional
problems, and needs time in a new environment.
