Although Marvelwood
does not expressly admit students with behavioral/emotional
problems, it does utilize a number of the elements of special
purpose schools. Thus, it can help students who are in the
early stages of behavioral problems and can act as a preventive
intervention for those students caught early enough in the
downward spiral of rebellion, resistance to authority, and
giving up. It is a college prep residential school with a
primary goal to provide a small, family-like supportive community
able to accommodate each student’s individual academic and
personal needs. The additional structure includes a four-to-one
student-teacher ratio, an active advisor system to motivate
and help set personal goals, a skills tutorial program to
upgrade confidence when needed, a closely supervised learning
process, and a community service program. A summer program
is available.
