This was one of
a series Sierra Tucson has been doing to bring professionals
from around the country in to see what the treatment facility
is doing, and for the professionals to meet the staff. There
were about 25 professionals involved with this group, and
we were all exhausted by two and one-half days of talks, discussions,
and participation in groups, the ropes course, and the equestrian
program.
The Sierra Tucson
staff feel they are on the cutting edge of short-term recovery
treatment, and I can't argue with that. The staff impressed
me with being real people, along with true caring about the
patients, showing enthusiasm for their work, and exhibiting
professionalism. The facilities seemed to lack nothing, and
the program has adopted many techniques from the latest knowledge
in education, experiential education, wilderness experiences,
and other disciplines.
Sierra Tucson is
aiming at becoming a resource for professionals working with
adolescents and other populations. An important element in
the referent weekend was to help professionals learn new ideas
as well as become more familiar with Sierra Tucson. They are
developing plans for an eating disorder conference this Fall,
and the Second Annual Southwest Adolescent Conference early
next year. They plan to give professionals in the mental health
field ample opportunity to update their knowledge and skills,
while learning about Sierra Tucson. If Sierra Tucson can help
themselves by helping professionals, more power to them.
