Mountain House Academy (formerly
known as Northstar Academy and a division of Mountain House Ministries)
is a Christian-oriented, co-educational Special Purpose School designed
for the child who has behavioral and emotional problems, but minimum
psychological damage. These children seem to respond best in schools
that emphasize structure, teach positive relationships, consequences,
honesty, hard work and responsibility.
The underlying concept is
spiritual. When a Young Person arrives, he/she is taught the difference
between religion and true biblical Christianity, helping establish a
code of ethics for right and wrong. A Spiritual change from within is
the most stable, dramatic change. Behavioral change is an essential
goal of the overall program.
The academy accepts students
between the ages of 12 and 17. It is certified by the California State
Department of Education, can offer a recognized high school diploma,
and is a member school of the Association of Christian Schools, International.
The program includes a step/level system, parent awareness training,
work study, and activities and recreation which are designed to work
on the development of social skills and the achievement of behavioral
goals.
The program does not accept
students with histories of extreme vandalism, extreme violence, fire-setting,
mental retardation, psychosis, and/or evidence of current addiction
to alcohol or drugs. The average length of stay in the program is 12
to 15 months.
