Life After The John Dewey Academy
(413) 528-9800
Great Barrington, MA
By Tom Bratter, President

The John Dewey Academy has graduated nine students who will attend the following colleges: Antioch (full scholarship), Boston College (wait list), Connecticut College (wait list), Pitzer College, St. John's College (New Mexico), Union College and two Wheaton College (one with a $10,000 scholarship).

Fifty Percent of all John Dewey Academy graduates currently have distinguished themselves academically by making the Deans' List at the following colleges: Hobart, Le Moyne, Universities of Chicago, Massachusetts and Hartford, Wellesley (elected Vice President of the student government) and Williams (appointed junior advisor).

Dr. Ken Steiner, Dean of Studies, stated "Many prestigious and demanding prep schools cannot match this percentage who have distinguished themselves academically. This confirms our belief often it is potentially the brightest and the best who get into trouble but can transcend their pitiful pasts when they are placed in an uncompromising and unrelenting educational, psychological and moral environment. What makes this record laudable is we admit our students on the basis of an interview and our assessment of their potential. We really are not that concerned about the applicant's past performance or standardized test scores."

Two members of the junior class of twelve are Merit Scholarship semi-finalists. Two others already have been accepted by Emory University and St. John's College for 1992.
