Who You Are And What You Do
By Dr. Curtis VanAlfen, Education Director

The Discovery Academy in Provo,
Utah is a school whose educational program is designed around a rather
unique concept. The school is working toward harmonizing, "who you are"
and "what you do."
In far too many interpersonal
relationships there is a distance between who you are and what you do.
When this is the case, a space of hypocrisy is created. Out of this
hypocrisy comes mistrust, doubt, anxiety and stress. When these conditions
are present it is very difficult for learning or personal growth of
any kind to take place.
It is the desire of each member
of the Discovery Academy staff to create an environment where relationships
of trust are developed, feeling of service to one another mature, and
visions of greatness become part of all participants' lives.
As these feelings of trust,
service and vision develop, the teaching goal is to develop self reliance.
This comes about through a process of learning, valuing and perceiving.
As a result of this process
the fundamental objective is to bring "who you are" and "what you do"
into greater harmony. Through teaching, learning, valuing, perceiving
trust, service and vision develop. It is one continual round.
The students at Discovery
Academy know they can trust the staff because they too are working to
bring into harmony in their lives "who they are" and "what they do."
