The Hurricane Island Outward
Bound Directive Program is an educational process dealing with motivational
and behavioral problems. Its objectives are to build confidence, to
increase self-esteem and to increase the sense of personal responsibility
in young people between the ages of 14-17. The program is a demanding,
24-day Outward Bound course conducted June to September in the rugged
and challenging environment of Maine's mountain wilderness and March
to December in the swampy marshlands and river systems of the Florida
Panhandle and southern Georgia.
Each course consists of 9-11
boys and girls, with a co-ed team of 3 instructors experienced in the
wilderness and in working with young people with emotional and behavioral
difficulties. It is designed as a preventive program, working with early
stages of behavior problems. The six starting dates for the Florida
program are June 11, June 25, July 23, July 30, October 16, and November
12. The four starting dates for the Maine program are June 19, June
26, July 31, and August 8. The starting dates for the ages 18-21 programs
are May 15 and September 11.
