I just received a brochure
in the mail announcing the opening of Sierra Tucson Adolescent Care
(STAC) in the Fall of 1991. The literature describes it as a residential
treatment center for adolescents ages 13-18 that specializes in working
with adolescents who are suffering from problems associated with alcohol,
drugs or emotional and behavioral disorders. It describes the Sierra
Model™ as offering a Twelve Step approach with the best features of
medicine, psychiatry, psychology, and spirituality. It further describes
it as emphasizing healing with support and love of family members to
assist in treatment of the patient. Also, they say this enables the
patient and family to focus on the determination toward wholeness and
health.
Regarding academics, they
claim an extensive academic assessment to help identify particular learning
differences, and credentialed teachers assisting the adolescent in maintaining
current scholastic requirements by working closely with the patient's
home school.
The stated goal is to work
toward developing constructive behaviors to replace the self-destructive
behaviors so common in adolescents that suffer from chemical abuse,
sexual dysfunction and aggressive behavior, by offering skills in decision
making, self reliance and independence.
