One year after Discovery Ranch opened its doors, the experiential
campus is bigger and better than ever.
Located in Mapleton, Utah, Discovery Ranch is a residential treatment
center that offers a ranch lifestyle founded on experiential therapy.
Since its opening in the summer of 2005, the ranch has added high
and low ropes courses, an indoor climbing wall, weight room complex,
and horsemanship classes. These activities compliment the ranch's
existing equine therapy and full academic course offerings.
Executive Director Clinton Dorny says, "We wanted to raise
the bar for experiential therapy facilities and that's what many
educational consultants say we've done."
Students receive at least seven hours of counseling each week
but that counseling usually takes place during experiential activities.
Dorny says, "Discovery Ranch counselors understand therapy
in the moment is more powerful than therapy in the office. We call
it 'real time' therapy. It allows students to process what they're
learning and feeling right now."
Located at the foot of Utah's Wasatch Mountains, the ranch sits
on twenty acres. It offers some of the finest equine facilities
in the West.
Two spacious homes provide a family-style living arrangement for
approximately 42 students. Boys and girls enjoy separate living,
learning and experiential therapy experiences.
The new facilities allow Discovery Ranch to expand experiential
opportunities. Dorny notes, "Discovery Ranch is deliberately
designed to facilitate shared experiences and create teaching opportunities.
That helps students progress faster toward healthy behaviors."
