As Maryann explained, "in a school environment, we define character education as 'a common language in the words we use'". Essentially the foundation to their program, the use of character education is taught through many different levels, starting with all staff, teachers and students, all working together to create a cohesive school environment and a safe setting. Our program is similar to other schools teaching character education, but our school has a consistency and predictability, to be a role model for character education and 'we totally believe in it'. "To work in a fair environment as an adult, it is not about competition but rather to help and be supportive to each other. What you learn here- you can go out and be that person." Lon presented the question- "what could a public school adopt from your program?" Maryann believes that some schools can nail it and use it every day. Each school has their traditions: fund raisers, proms, dances, team spirit assemblies, and using those activities can be associated with character education, but you have to be diligent and keep it fresh in order to have the students fully participate in it.
