The book "Addiction and Denial" was first developed by Carl Olding, founder of Elk Mountain Academy in north Idaho, a therapeutic boarding school for boys, as a manual for quarterly parent workshops at the school. Ten years after first writing it, a parent liked it so much she edited it and published it as a gift of thanks. It is available at amazon.com. He discussed his book and school with Lon on Sept. 15, 2016.

Olding explained that a main emphasis of the book is the importance of parents keeping their word with their children. In other words, "Say what you mean, and mean what you say." Parents waffling and denial of there being a problem, in extreme cases can be deadly explained Olding.

Another point he makes is that drug abuse is not a moral question in being good, bad or wrong, but simply a matter of mental health.

Another emphasis to parents dealing with the problem of drug/alcohol abuse is there is hope and often the problem can be reversed.

He also discussed other activities some of his students had been doing that show similar patterns of addiction such as Internet and pornography.
