From Strugglingteens.com Breaking News Mountain Valley Treatment Center Pike, NH Anxiety Summer Program for Teens Contact: Carl Lovejoy Associate Executive Director Communications and Development 603-989-3500 clovejoy@mountainvalleytreatment.org www.mountainvalleytreatment.org Mountain Valley Treatment Center, located in Pike, NH, is pleased to announce the creation of a two-week Summer Anxiety Mastery Program, designed especially, but not exclusively, for Mountain Valley Treatment Center graduates (ages 13 to 18) who would be interested in, and benefit from, a refresher course that blends summer fun with exposure-based anxiety treatment. Working with many of the therapists and staff members who helped them to overcome their debilitating fears during their initial stay at Mountain Valley, the Summer Anxiety Mastery Program's mission is to prepare MVTC graduates for the challenges of the school year ahead by reviewing, and mastering, previously taught exposure-based skills. Staff The Summer Anxiety Mastery Program (SAMP) features a staff of experienced anxiety treatment experts - many of whom who have worked closely, and successfully, with our graduates during their initial period of treatment. The 2015 SAMP staff will include:
Therapeutic Model Building upon the fundamental skills learned in MVTC's Treatment Phase, participants in SAMP will once again face their hierarchy of fears utilizing gradual Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) as the primary evidenced based treatment modality for an array of anxiety disorders. Working with our talented therapists who have a positive, pre-existing relationship with them, our graduates are exposed to the feared objects, activities, or situations in an environment that, while familiar, can be extremely anxiety inducing. Mirroring the MVTC treatment model, Exposure Therapy at SAMP is conducted in a controlled, compassionate and most importantly, collaborative fashion with the MVTC graduates so as to increase internal motivation for positive change and to enhance treatment outcomes - as well as to better prepare them for the academic year ahead. The SAMP experience also affords participants, particularly those who are Mountain Valley graduates, to serve as peer mentors and role models for the current MVTC students - a wonderful opportunity to "give back" to Mountain Valley. Family Experience While much SAMP's focus will be directed towards the participants, the final two days of the program (July 24 and 25) will be devoted to a family experience, and we encourage our parents to join us for this powerful exploration of family dynamics - as well as for the SAMP commencement exercises. ERP Activities SAMP recognizes that our graduates are returning to Mountain Valley to engage in the challenging task of facing their fears and honing their Exposure and Response Prevention skills. At the same time, we are also well aware that it will be July in New Hampshire, a perfect time to have some outdoor fun and adventure - all in the name of exposure therapy! ERP activities will include:
Daily Schedule Our daily schedule replicates that of a typical traditional summer camp, enhanced with robust exposure experiences. SAMP participants have breakfast in The Creamery, and then engage in a Morning Mindfulness exercise. After Morning Mindfulness, we gather together for CBT, Exposure Therapy and Relapse Prevention Recovery groups. After lunch, we are off to Afternoon ERP Adventures, and then return for dinner, or not! Post dinner, staff and participants engage in a purposeful, but fun, ERP exercise. Upon returning to their dormitory, SAMP participants once again convene for Reflections and Closures, a perfect way to process the events of the day using well-learned mindfulness techniques. Weekend Schedule The mid-Program weekend begins Friday evening and concludes Sunday evening. Over the course of the weekend, SAMP participants and staff members will engage in purposeful exposure centric activities. Such activities may include:
