CERTS adds two new Educational Administrators to our team!
It has been a fantastic summer and fall for the CERTS Schools! This summer the CERTS Schools continued to show its commitment to academics by reorganizing the education department to include the addition of two very talented educational administrators.
Stan Stewart came on in June to be the Dean of Academics at Mountain Springs Preparatory Academy and Genevieve Hunter was promoted in August to be the Education Director of LaEuropa Academy. Each bring with them a wealth of experience working with teens and both have already started to make a difference for our students.
Stan and Genevieve joined Stefanie Trimmer the Education Director at Kolob Canyon School and Moonridge Academy and Kori Mayeski who is now concentrating her efforts on the coordination of all four of the CERTS Schools.
Here is a brief introduction to our outstanding staff and a small sample of the work they have already been doing to make a difference in the lives of our students.
Stanley Stewart, B.A.
Mountain Springs Preparatory Academy Dean of Academics
Stan comes to Mountain Springs Prep with 27 years of experience in education. He has been a Math teacher, 7 sport coach, Math Department Chair, and High School Principal in his career of service in the education field. We are very excited to have Stan on board to lead our education program and serve as the athletic director for our students.
Stan has quickly seen the vision of Mountain Springs and has focused his efforts on leadership development. In September he worked with his teaching staff and nominated Mountain Springs Prep students for awards on State of Utah's First Lady Mary Kaye Huntsman's Power Tour through Utah. Two of our Mountain Springs students were honored as award winners; one with the Power to Make a Difference (a student who makes a difference in the school or community through service and example) and one with the Power to Build Others (a student who stands up for others, who complements rather than criticizes, and who encourages others to be kind)!
Additionally, in October Stan led a group of 12 Mountain Springs Students including his newly elected Student Body Presidency, to the Power to Influence Conference held at Utah Valley State College. As you can see, Stan is off to a great start leading the academic program at Mountain Springs Preparatory Academy.
Genevieve Hunter, B.S.
La Europa Academy Education Director
Genevieve earned her undergraduate degree in Education from Brigham Young University. She holds teaching credentials in math, elementary education, and special education. After teaching in California at the Pacific Autism Center for Education, Genevieve returned to Utah to teach math at an all-girl residential treatment center for a two and a half years prior to coming to work at LaEuropa Academy in June of 2005. In addition to her administrative duties, Genevieve coordinates the special education services and administers the Learning Technics program at La Europa Academy.
Genevieve clearly understands the mission of LaEuropa and began her work by helping coordinate the entrance of one of our students in the local Irish Dancing competition where she was able to take 2nd place!! Genevieve then coordinated a trip for 8 of our students to Cedar City, Utah to attend the Tony Award Winning Utah Shakespearean Festival. Students had been taking a Shakespeare course in the summer term that was team taught by our English and Theatre teachers to include both the literary and theatrical components of the plays they were able to see at the festival. Genevieve is committed to maintaining our college preparatory curriculum and supplementing the in-class learning with meaningful out of class experiences.
Stefanie Trimmer, B.A.
Kolob Canyon & Moonridge Academy Education Director
Stefanie has been working in the CERTS Schools since 2002 and holds a Bachelors degree in Special Education and Elementary Education. She is certified to teach in the Elementary and Secondary setting. Stefanie has a strong desire to direct young people down positive roads. Stefanie loves to combine her love of the outdoors into her educational setting to promote learning, health and responsibility.
This October Stefanie led the students at Kolob Canyon School to participate in the Utah High School Shakespeare competition held in Cedar City Utah. It is the largest contest of this kind in the Western United States. Students came to compete from as far away as Michigan. Most of the drama students prepare for this from the beginning of their high school experience. Only a few students from each school are chosen to perform. This year all of our Kolob students preformed an ensemble scene from "A Midsummer Night's Dream." To say that our school was the smallest school that attended the festival is an understatement. The students took 4th place in our division. This was a remarkable achievement to say the least! Thanks to Stefanie's efforts, the students that participated in this adventure will have an appreciation for Shakespeare's plays that will last a lifetime.
Kori Mayeski, M.S., Educational Leadership
C.E.R.T.S. Education Director
Kori earned her undergraduate degree in Secondary Social Studies Education from the University of Maryland, College Park. After teaching in both Middle School and High School, Kori continued her education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She earned a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership/Administration. At both the University of Tennessee and Georgia Tech, Kori worked with freshman students in their transition to college. She taught an introductory Psychology course helping students adjust to their new environment. Most recently, Kori served as an Assistant Education Director for an all-girl residential treatment center for almost 4 years before coming to work with the CERTS schools in February of 2005. Kori coordinates with the Education Directors and teachers to provide an individualized, college-preparatory curriculum designed to both challenge and support the young women who attend the CERTS schools.
Kori has begun her work by asking each CERTS school to do a self-study to determine its strengths and weaknesses both in the education program as well as in its support of the overall mission of the school. A particular point of emphasis in the CERTS schools is assessment. This self-improvement process is underway and will provide invaluable data for us as we seek to attain excellence in education in the future.
