I'm writing this note with a very heavy heart. On Sunday morning, two vehicles from Sunrise carrying students and staff members were in route from Hurricane, Utah to Moab for a Sunday outing. On the way, a suburban driven by a Sunrise staff member was involved in a single vehicle accident. There were five Sunrise students in the suburban along with our staff driver. One of the students was killed instantly, another student sustained major injuries, and a third student sustained a compound fracture. The Sunrise staff driver and two additional students sustained minor injuries.
The second vehicle, a van carrying Sunrise students and staff members, was not involved in the accident but was on the scene immediately thereafter. All therapists and residential staff at Sunrise have been called in to help every girl and every family through this crisis.
We are deeply, deeply saddened by this terrible tragedy. Our hearts break for our student who was killed, for her family, and for all those who sustained injuries or trauma. Please keep our community in your prayers during the coming days.
