New Horizons Youth Ministries (NHYM), established in 1971, is a therapeutic Christian education institution for high potential, underachieving teens. Students, ranging in age from 12-18 years old, come from strong Christian families where their primary problems are low self-esteem, behavior problems, underachievement in school, parental problems, poor peer choices, and a lack of commitment to God. The average length of stay is 18 months.
The program consists of three campuses, and students usually attend all three before transitioning back to their families or attending local Christian universities. The first, Missanabie Woods Academy, in Missanabie, Ontario, is an all-summer wilderness survival program for children age 11-17. The second, Escuela Caribe, for boys and girls age 13-17 is located in the foothills of Dominican Republic. It is a Christian therapeutic school that provides a combination of learning experiences designed to raise personal potential through character enrichment and cultivation of a lifetime desire for excellence. The third program is New Horizons Academy, located in Marion, IN, which helps students to develop a strong character and prepare to return home.
NHYM offers intensive individual and group counseling by licensed therapists, which is augmented by live-in house-parents and a strong behavior modification component. The education component is provided by a staff with a ratio of five students per each accredited teacher. Diplomas are certified by and meet the State of Indiana requirements.
