Flying 7 Ranch For Youth is a working cattle and horse ranch for young men, ages 11-18 years, who struggle with substance abuse, depression, low self esteem, relationships with peers and family or struggle with poor grades and school. Enrollment is limited to eight to guarantee individual/one-on-one attention.
Founded in January of 2006, the ranch is owned and operated by Mike Harrigfeld and his wife Lola. Mike, a high school coach who grew up on his father's cattle ranch, uses his 30 years of coaching to "mentor" students. Chad Harrigfeld and his wife Tori are the managers at the ranch. Chad is a certified trainer in Positive Control Systems.
Students' daily life centers around life on a working ranch, which involves calving, foaling, branding, round ups and cattle drives. Each student at the ranch is assigned his own horse which he will learn to care for and train by the ranch staff which is made up of cowhands and horse trainers.
Academics are met through Bonneville High School special needs department, yet are taught directly at the ranch. One significant part of the curriculum includes a daily journal to follow their unique experiences on the ranch and to chart progress with achieved goals.
