CHANGES AT MONTANA ACADEMY
In a August 21, 1998 letter, Dir. of Admissions Rosemary McKinnon, 406-755-3149, and the other leadership of Montana Academy located
outside Kalispell, Montana, announced several staff and program changes. The staff changes include recruiting experienced administrator
and social worker Rick Johnson as Head of School, replacing John Santa who becomes Clinical Director, adding Jerry Hok as a biology
teacher, and Craig Walker as a new therapist and mentor. In the next few weeks Kenny and Mary Pannell will be leaving since they found
the “coming staffing schedule too hard to accommodate to their family responsibilities….” There are numerous changes in the program
structure also.
STUDY FIND FATHERLESS YOUTH AT HIGHER RISK FOR JAIL
A news story carried by Reuters on 8/20/98 reports the results of a study by Cynthia Harper of the University of Pennsylvania and
Sara S. McLanahan of Princeton University. “They found that those boys whose fathers were absent from the household had double the
odds of being incarcerated – even when other factors such as race, income, parent education and urban residence were held constant.
Surprisingly, those boys who grow up with a step-father in the home were at even higher risk for incarceration, roughly three times
that of children who remain with both of their natural parents, according to a study being presented at a meeting of the American
Sociological Association Friday.”
BRIAN CHURCH ADDS PROGRAM
Brian Church, of Programs that Perform, 909-898-0015, reports that as of August 20, 1998, he has started to represent Second Nature,
an outstanding new wilderness program which was highlighted in the June/July issue of Woodbury Reports.
FARNSWORTH, PRESIDENT OF W.W.A.S.P., OFFERS A WARRANTY
Karr Farnsworth, the Head of Cross Creek Manor, in LaVerkin, Utah, has taken on the duties of the World Wide Association of Specialty
Programs (W.W.A.S.P.) which includes Cross Creek Manor in Utah, Paradise Cove in Western Samoa, Tranquility Bay in Jamaica, Morava
Academy in the Czech Republic, and Spring Creek Lodge in Montana. The Association offers a “Warranty” which states “If a student completes
the Program, having fulfilled all stages and criteria as outlined in each Program’s current parent manual, the student may be re-admitted
to either the Program or an affiliate Program for up to 60 days of free tuition, if he or she should slip into old behavior patterns
before the age of 18.”
HIDDEN LAKE ACADEMY STAFF APPOINTMENTS
Len Buccellato, founder of Hidden Lake Academy near Dahlonega, Georgia, 800-394-0640, announced the appointment of Arnold Zilberkant
as Associate Director of Counseling, and Michael Webster as Assistant Director of Academics.
CNN QUICK POLL
Shortly after the Springfield, Oregon high school shooting, CNN conducted a non-scientific reader response poll with the question,
“Who or what is most responsible for school violence?” The results as of May 28, 1998 showed that 29% of the respondents though Parents
were most responsible, 24% thought Access to guns, 15% thought the Media, 8% thought Kids, 2% thought Schools, 19% thought All of
the above, and 2% thought None of the above.
