Quotes - Jun, 1995 Issue

Cause and effect are two sides of one fact. Every secret is told, every crime is punished, every virtue is rewarded, every wrong is redressed, in silence and certainty.... Cause and effect, means and ends, seed and fruit, cannot be severed; for the effect already blooms in the cause, the end pre-exists in the means, the fruit is in the seed.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
A true and universally acceptable value is one that produces behavior that is beneficial both to the practitioner and to those on whom it is practiced.... [a criterian] A value is a quality distinguished by (a) its ability to multiply and increase in our possession even as it is given away; and (b) the fact (even the law) that the more it is given to others, the more it will be returned by others and received by ourselves.
- Linda & Richard Eyre. Teaching Your Children Values. P. 27. 1993.
All happy families resemble one another, but each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
- Leo Tolstoy, in Anna Karenina.
