Therapeutic Guide |
We often hire pre-licensed candidates as direct-care Therapeutic Guides. Therapeutic Guides can usually accrue direct and indirect contact hours that count toward internships or hours for licensure. Therapeutic Guides are often recent graduates of masters degree programs or substance abuse counseling programs who are hoping to become therapists in OBH. Therapeutic Guide shifts are 8 days on and 6 days off and require a commitment to work a specified length of time. We are currently hiring summer/seasonal and full time Therapeutic Guides. Summer/seasonal positions typically start in May and go through the end of August, while full time positions usually require a sincere commitment to Aspiro for one-year-long increments.
As a Therapeutic Guide, you will receive valuable experience and training in direct delivery of therapeutic adventure programming. Our Therapeutic Guides serve a very important role in student safety and direct delivery of therapeutic services. Many Therapeutic Guides serve as Team Leaders and work very closely with our therapists in designing and delivering services. Aspiro Therapeutic Guides have the opportunity for exceptionally challenging and rewarding experience in OBH. Therapeutic Guide duties and experience includes:
- Weekly staffing and treatment planning with therapists
- Counseling and advising students on trail
- Training in the application of proven therapeutic modalities in OBH (e.g. CBT, DBT, Motivational Enhancement, life skills development, collaborative problem solving, social thinking, substance abuse treatment, family therapy, positive psychology, therapeutic journaling and the development of self-efficacy and self-determination through adventure therapy, etc.)
- Attending and participating in training, treatment, clinical and staffing meetings
- Making case presentations
- Co-facilitating individual and group therapy sessions with a therapist
- Leading group and individual counseling on trail
- Co-facilitate parent/family phone calls with a therapist
- Communication and coordination with referral sources
- Conducting intake interviews
- Administering various clinical and strengths based assessments
- Assisting in creating and updating treatment plans
- Assisting in creating treatment summaries and recommendations
- Learning about leadership and administration in outdoor therapeutic programs
Please note: Not all of the hours you work as a Therapeutic Guide are likely to count as clinical hours. The following is a rough estimate of direct and indirect contact hours available per month of employment as a Therapeutic Guide:
- 16 hours co-facilitating individual therapy sessions with a therapist
- 4 hours co-facilitating group therapy sessions with a therapist
- 8 hours delivering individual therapy under supervision
- 16 hours of running groups under supervision
- 8 hours of clinical meetings and group and individual supervision
Therapeutic Guides might be able to get even more clinical hours each month, depending on how flexible and motivated you are to take advantage of all opportunities.
If you are dedicated, enthusiastic, mature, sincere and reliable and you are ready to take your OBH career to the next step, please email your resume and cover letter expressing your particular interests to gday@aspiroadventure.com

Clinical/Therapist |
Thank you for your interest in clinical positions with Aspiro. We have many applicants and competition for clinical positions in strong Outdoor Behavioral Health (OBH) programs is very high. We are seeking energetic, mature, highly professional, dedicated, reliable, honest, dynamic and hard working individuals for our clinical positions. Currently, Aspiro is seeking therapists who have post-graduate experience, current licensure and a proven track record of success in Outdoor Behavioral Health. If you feel you may qualify, please feel free to send your curriculum vitae to Dr. Gordon Day, Director of Clinical Services at gday@aspiroadventure.com.
For less experienced candidates seeking clinical experience in OBH, there are two other routes at Aspiro. One is as a Clinical Intern and the other is as a Therapeutic Guide.
Clinical Intern: These are normally volunteer positions (occasional paid positions are available) and can be very flexible. Candidates must be eligible for internship hours through an accredited graduate program in counseling, marriage and family therapy or psychology. Internships for those in substance abuse counseling programs may also be available. Our Clinical Interns gain valuable treatment experience and introduction to the world of OBH. Typical duties and experience for Clinical Interns include:
- Shadowing/assisting one or more therapists
- Training in the application of proven therapeutic modalities in OBH (e.g. CBT, DBT, Motivational Enhancement, life skills development, collaborative problem solving, social thinking, substance abuse treatment, family therapy, positive psychology, therapeutic journaling and the development of self-efficacy and self-determination through adventure therapy, etc.)
- Attending and participating in training, treatment, clinical and staffing meetings
- Making case presentations
- Co-facilitating individual and group therapy sessions with a therapist
- Co-facilitate parent/family phone calls with a therapist
- Communication and coordination with referral sources
- Conducting intake interviews
- Administering various clinical and strengths based assessments
- Assisting in creating and updating treatment plans
- Assisting in creating treatment summaries and recommendations
- Learning about leadership and administration in outdoor therapeutic programs
Most, if not all, of the hours worked as a clinical intern would normally count as direct or indirect client care hours for licensure or for internships. Aspiro can provide well-qualified supervision, certification of contact hours, reporting progress to internship supervisors and fulfilling of internship requirements. Please note: For well-qualified internship candidates, occasional paid internship opportunities may be available.

Adventure Guide |
| Aspiro is a high-impact Adventure Therapy Program that serves both adolescents and young adults. As an Adventure Therapy Program, Aspiro provides healing, direction, and personal empowerment through a solution-based clinical approach that is strategically combined with daily and weekly adventures. Wilderness adventures may include white water rafting, canoeing, snowboarding, skiing, caving, canyoneering, top-rope rock climbing, rappelling, hiking, and mountain biking. Students receive individual and group therapy on weekly basis that helps them reflect on the challenges they face through the daily adventures of Aspiro and at home. Parents and students attend family seminars throughout the process. Students gradually begin to learn new, healthy coping strategies that lead to future success and family integration. The goal is to help students develop a higher level of self-efficacy and eliminate negative, self-destructive behaviors. Adventure Guides are a key element of this therapeutic process as they guide students through the adventure expedition and build relationships as a member of a therapeutic team. Typical student profiles are adolescent males and females, ages 13-17, and young adults, ages 18-30, with a history of mild to moderate behavioral problems, low self-esteem, academic underachievement, substance abuse, mild depression, bipolar, anxiety, and family conflict.
Adventure Guides General Requirements: If you love the outdoors, can pass criminal background check and drug screen, have excellent references. Must be at least 20 years old, neatly groomed and be comfortable in promoting basic moral values with adolescents and adults.
Back packing, navigation skills, back country medical training and rock climbing, canoeing, rafting, caving, skiing, and biking skills helpful. One year of previous experience working with adolescents preferred. Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness EMT, or equivalent is recommended. Applicants with education or interest in social work, experiential education, outdoor recreation, psychology or related fields are encouraged to apply. Energetic, fun and creative people who are good role models for youth and who love the outdoors are encouraged to apply.
Salary: Pay starts at $110 per day up to $200 per day with scheduled bonuses ($23,760 to $43,200 per year). Prior experience and education is recognized. Benefits include full health and dental insurance, climbing gym membership and a variety of professional gear deals. Aspiro also provides training stipends for WFR, professional conferences, hard-skills workshops and other professional development.
Although housing is not provided, many people find living arrangements with other Field Instructors, sharing apartments with a person on your opposite schedule or renting a house together.
