Job Description
Wilderness Endeavors Instructor Duties:
The Contractor (Wilderness Instructor), who is not a state employee, will: present and implement a comprehensive plan for organizing and leading an intensive 21-day wilderness experience course for students (adjudicated delinquent boys and girls, ages 13-17). The course plan shall be presented to the State's authorized representative for approval at least twenty-one (21) days prior to the scheduled course. The plan shall be in accord with the philosophy, goals, policy and procedures of the Wilderness Endeavors program and all include:
- 12-16 hours of programming per day using Adventure Therapy Methodologies, and 24 hours per day supervision of students.
- Planned adventure activities including ropes course, team's course, rock climbing and wilderness travel involving backpacking, wilderness canoe camping, or winter camping, depending on seasonal conditions and including a four (4) day solo for students.
- Instruction of students in the required technical skills.
- A detailed trip itinerary, including pre-planned evacuation routes.
- Organizing and packing all of clothing, food and equipment.
- Maintenance of high level of trail safety and environmental standards.
- EMT, WEMT or WFR certification required.
- Course areas include Lake Superior Hiking Trail, Voyagers National Park, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and extensive winter wilderness travel in Minnesota's North Country.
