Field Instructor

Position Summary
The staff team consists of two instructors to 6-8 students with on-call supervisors acting as support. Each staff member works 8 days on, 6 days off, from Thursday to Thursday. Compensation includes a weekly salary as well as daily meals during the working period. Daily duties include role modeling Pacific Quest rules and structure, assisting facilitation of time and schedule management and keeping students safe through constant monitoring and risk assessment.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Monitoring of students and management of the group dynamic.
  • Risk assessment and management in accordance with field manual.
  • Regular, clear communication with staff team and supervisors.
  • Execution of medication and wellness plans as mandated by Medical Director.
  • Role modeling for students the rules and behaviors we ask them to follow.
  • Learning and showing continued growth through the mastery of both Pacific Quest “hard skills” (ex: proper kitchen procedures) and “soft skills” (ex: therapeutic intervention techniques).
  • Participating in work projects with the students.
  • Facilitating daily roles for students.
  • Maintaining current NVCI (non-violent crisis intervention) training.
  • Following daily schedule and routines as mandated by supervisors.
  • Teaching lessons and facilitating learning about gardening, sustainable life and living skills, and Hawaiian culture.

Qualifications
With or without reasonable accommodation, the physical and mental requirements of this job may include the following: seeing, hearing, speaking, and writing clearly. Occasional reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling.  Frequent sitting, standing and walking, which may be required for long periods of time, and may involve climbing stairs and walking up inclines and on uneven terrain. Additional physical requirements may include, frequent lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred (or comparable experience), preferably in Psychology, arming/Agroecology or Outdoor Education.
  • Experience with “at-risk” youth or within wilderness therapy a huge plus
  • 21 years or older
  • Valid CPR/First Aid certification
  • Valid Driver's License with clean record
  • Ability to pass thorough background check
  • Ability to pass drug test on arrival

Solo Facilitator

Program Description
Pacific Quest offers a unique approach to wilderness therapy by replacing hiking and survival skills with work on our organic farm and sustainable life skills within a rites-of-passage model. Our approach is based on structure, support and choice as opposed to coercion or punitive consequences; it allows for students to grow individually, at their own pace, with their own motivations.

Position Summary
The primary responsibility of the Solo Facilitator is to safely and effectively facilitate all aspects of the solo program at Pacific Quest, both at our Hilo and Ka’u facilities. Some travel between the two locations will be required. In addition to safely and professionally facilitating the solos, the Solo Facilitator is in charge of the solo camp and has the responsibilities listed below. The position is directly under the supervision of the Field and Program Directors, with support from the Clinical and Field Departments. Familiarity with rites-of-passage is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining systems regarding and supervising solo protocols and procedures
  • Checking in with Field Supervisors, Wellness Department, and Clinical Department regarding staffing and student eligibility and/or concerns for solo
  • Maintaining binders of all pertinent safety, logistical and curricular information for solo
  • Sound ability to evaluate unsafe behaviors or situations and communicate in an effective and timely manner within the on-call structure
  • Training support staff within solo camp
  • Solo prep groups and logistical work with students participating and staff assisting with the solo
  • Clear, timely and effective documentation of each solo and observations of both staff and students involved.
  • Following all safety protocols, training staff on these protocols and documenting and communicating any concerns

 

Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Ability to be flexible and fill in during crisis situations
  • Maintain current CPI certification

Qualifications

  • Industry experience and experience working with adolescents of a similar population
  • Strong leadership abilities
  • Experience in supervision and ability to work with students in crisis
  • Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • Ability to drive manual vehicles is desired
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds
  • Requires ability to be a team player, to form mutually respectful relationships with staff and students and to grow professionally in meeting the challenges of this position
  • Ability to work with team of professionals as well as the ability to work independently
  • Ability to pass a thorough background check
